Santa Cruz skateboards, 'V-Day', Veteran’s Division
What is it? - Santa Cruz is the oldest skateboard company in the world. It has been around through every single generation of skateboarding to date and its company ethos has influenced the very soul of skate culture more than any other. From the iconic graphics of Jim Phillips, to the major innovations in board construction (Everslicks, Powerlytes, etc), the slew of incredibly influential and truly ground breaking videos they released throughout the 80’s and, most importantly the pro’s that have ridden for Santa Cruz; all of these factors have created
a legacy which anyone would be hard pressed to match. Three years ago, Santa Cruz launched their ‘Veteran Division’ at the behest of former SC pro’s Eric Dressen and Tom Knox and this is the first video testament to that idea being played out.
Who’s on it? - The main four section/bio’s are with Santa Cruz vets and legends from four eras: Keith Meek, Jason Jessee, Eric Dressen and Tom Knox with bits and pieces from all manner of related SC types, both new and archive dotting throughout.
Highlights? - Well I’ve heard a few grumbles about this on a few of the forums aimed more squarely at the older skate market mainly due to the fact that 50% of the skating on here is archive stuff from Santa Cruz/Speed Wheels classics such as ‘Streets on Fire’, ‘Speed Freaks’ and ‘Risk it’, rather than unseen footage. However, for anyone who never saw the original litany of Santa Cruz vid’s then you’re in for a real treat; or, if you’ve only got rapidly degrading VHS copies of the classics then you’ll be well pleased. Tom Knox has the most new footage and Jason Jessee has the least but each of the four featured pros have roughly a 10-minute bio piece each, complete with archive skating, interviews and comments from their peers/team mates including everyone from Rich Novak to Geoff Rowley. I’m not going into detail as to what skate stuff each person has but rest assured that if you need to cram up on your skate history, this is a great place to start.Overall? - A really well done On video-style history lesson from Santa Cruz with classic SST soundtrack and some truly seminal moments from the last 30 years of Santa Cruz’s tenure. This is well worth trading your pennies for.
