Ape Skates - “A Dirty Marketing Trick”

April 01, 2008

What Is It?

A good old fashioned shop video from the folks at Ape Skates in Taunton, who just so happen to be the subject of out RE:tales last month. Baring in mind the people responsible for this DVD live in rural Somerset, expect some inventive DIY style spots and lots of creative skating.

Who's On It?

Russ Skully, Matt Pasos, Aaron White, Mike and Steve O'Shea, Jon Vallance, Chris Willis, Luke Parkman and assorted friends.

Highlights

After some ape anger is released on an unsuspecting Loch Ness Monster, Mike O'Shea gets down to business utilising the serious pop that he possesses, as demonstrated by the shuvit flip in his first line and the belter of a flat ground back 360 that starts another line later on in his section. The ollie over the railing at Little Lloyds in Bristol to nosemanual down the bank has "Faces of Death" written all over it. Definitely a good section to start the DVD with.

Mike is followed by a short part from Chris Wills, who appears to own the fastest heelflip in the West and is unafraid to conquer large rails and stairs. Russ Skully seems to be drawn to spots involving water, as does Matt Pasos who almost looses his board to some with the first 30 seconds of his section. Matt's got some interesting tricks in his repertoire, including a nollie backside fingerflip on a bank, and nosemanual nollie fingerflip out, both done surprisingly clean. Aaron White follows with some well flipped nollie tricks and balanced manual skills.

Much like his brother Mike, Steve O'Shea can certainly make his flips leave the ground and pulls out some progressive transition tricks at his local park.

DVD creator Jon Vallance has the penultimate part which sees him making good use of the blocks at Taunton skatepark and throwing a massive tre flip over a hefty cobbled road gap. Good work boss!

The curtains belong to Luke Parkman, whose surreal section ends the DVD perfectly. Luke's skating reminds me of a young Dan Cates, and his hi jump 5050 on a 5 foot fence, hop into a bank on the other side ender is nothing short of ridiculous!
