Switch backside flip with Billy Marks

June 01, 2007

This trick requires that you put in some serious effort on the straight switch flip before pushing towards this number. For some unknown reason, too, the board just seems to do all of the work pop wise – so long as your timing sits right.

1. So, get your front foot toes tucked in just below those bolts pointed diagonally forward. Crouch.

2. As with the regular version you are going to need to wind up, although as you are returning to your natural stance once you land this, there doesn’t need to be as much unleashing happening.

3. Pretty much everyone has the back toes overhanging on this. Whilst it doesn’t look so good on the regular version, the switch one seems to come out okay. That, and the foot in the middle of the board style for this just makes it so much harder. I guess it sorts the men from the boys, though!

4. Pop. C’mon – I don’t need to explain that – You are trying switch backside flips for Christ’s sake.

5. Did you notice how weird that feels? This one takes some getting used to. As your back foot connects with the floor to pop the board your upper body should be pretty much facing backwards. If you aren’t in this position you may as well call it a day now on the ‘backside’ part of this trick.

6. So, you’ve popped the board off of the ground, your body is reaching 90 degrees – It’s time to get the switch flick into action. I’ve been told before to just ‘do the splits’ to get this to work. It makes sense as you need to get the popping foot clear to let the board flip around whilst your front foot straightens out toe punt style.

7. As I said in the intro to this – the board does all of the work pop-wise. This is why the toe overhang technique works. With the little extra pop you can get both feet back on board before your wheels are on the ground.

8. Get ready to feel twisted. Most people end up tic-tacking out of this as the last 30 degrees of your upper body turning as it tends to not know how naturally to finish the turn. A little fine tuning as all will be right.

9. Who’s stoked? You are.
